Simon Says

Rysa Walker has become a must read for me. A very good friend kept urging me that I was missing something before I picked up Time Bound and he was right. The characters that Ms. Walker develops are very believable and have very captivating personalities that make you love or hate them. Simon Rand, affectionately known as Rat Bastard, is one you hate. Even after this glimpse into the inner mind of this character I really have no real affection for him. He is, a bastard in more than one definition of the word. Simon is a time traveler thanks to his wizardry with the Chronos key and in my opinion, with his personality being a mixture of idiot savant with a touch of evil, he grows up fast and hard and doesn’t have any qualms about who’s rules he breaks. Even the master mind behind the Cyrists, Saul, who plans every move he makes like a chess game he always wins is a little more likable than Simon.

In this novella, we see Simon as a kid before he truly was twisted by the fates of time and crossing times over and over again. His connection with his “friend” Kiernan is just beginning to be explored and it gives me a little bit more empathy for him…..just a little bit though. Especially when we see that his obsession and his determination to find out what truly happened cause him to set the history of a nation spiraling because he jumps before thinking it through. This along with his other experiments with the key as well as his work for the Cyrists, Brother Cyrus and Saul are only just starting though and one can hope that some way we get to see him stumble a few more times. I must strongly recommend that the reader start with Time Bound though to get the full emotion and direction of the series and the dynamic characters Ms. Walker has created. Even Simon, a character that I still haven’t much affection for is an amazing character and his story was a great read that filled in more blanks in the Chronos key world. I was given this copy for an honest review.
